Leading with Purpose, Teaching Through Connection

My name is Xavier Ellsworth, and I am an educator dedicated to building student-centered learning environments where every child feels seen, supported, and challenged to succeed. I grew up in Washington, DC, where my path of service began early—first as a volunteer EMT and later through a year with City Year. That year, serving in a Southeast DC public school, opened my eyes to the power of education and showed me how much of a difference one caring adult can make. It was the moment I knew I wanted to spend my life working with students.

After completing my service year, I earned an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Dean College before transferring to Manhattanville University, where I majored in Elementary Education and Creative Writing. As a member of the track and field team, I learned firsthand the importance of discipline, resilience, and leadership—qualities that continue to shape my work in the classroom and beyond. Since graduating in 2020, I’ve taught third grade at Icahn Charter School in the Bronx.

My teaching philosophy is simple: effort leads to growth, and relationships make it last. I’ve seen how consistent effort can unlock student potential, but I also know that achievement is most powerful when it grows out of trust and connection. Every child is different, so I make it a point to build relationships that honor who they are and support how they learn best.

Outside of the classroom, I lead a basketball club, support students through Saturday Academy, and run Xavier Ellsworth Tutoring Services, where I work with K–6 students in math, reading, writing, and study skills. I also coach basketball in other school communities, using sports to teach teamwork, perseverance, and confidence. I see athletics and academics as deeply connected—both require focus, hard work, and the belief that effort pays off.

In the summer, I continue my work with young people at Home Run Baseball Camp, a community I’ve been part of since middle school. What started as a camper experience has grown into years of leadership, and in 2024, I returned as Camp Director in Southeast DC.

Right now, I’m pursuing a Master’s in Educational Leadership at Manhattanville University, preparing for the next step in my career as a school leader. I live in White Plains, NY, with my wife and our newborn son, Brayden. Becoming a father has only deepened my commitment to making sure every child has the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.

At the heart of everything I do is this belief: when effort begins and connection is built, achievement will always follow.
