Leading with Purpose, Teaching Through Connection

My name is Xavier Ellsworth, and I am a dedicated educator committed to building equitable, student-centered learning environments that inspire growth, resilience, and academic success. Originally from Washington, DC, my journey in service began early—exploring roles such as volunteering as an EMT—before discovering my true calling in education. That realization was solidified during a transformative year with City Year, where I supported students in a Southeast DC public school. This experience ignited a lifelong passion for teaching and affirmed my commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of young learners.

After completing my service year, I earned an associate degree in Early Childhood Education from Dean College, then transferred to Manhattanville University, where I double majored in Elementary Education and Creative Writing. As a student-athlete on the track and field team, I developed a deep appreciation for discipline, perseverance, and leadership—values that continue to shape my work in and out of the classroom. Since graduating in 2020, I have served as a third-grade teacher at Icahn Charter School in the Bronx.

My educational philosophy is grounded in two core beliefs: effort is everything, and connection is essential to success. I have seen firsthand that when students commit to consistent effort, real growth occurs. However, academic achievement is most impactful when it is built on trust and meaningful relationships. I believe that every child is different—and because of this, every relationship must be unique. Taking the time to understand each student as an individual allows me to support their learning in a way that is intentional, personal, and empowering.

In the classroom, I strive to create inclusive, high-expectation learning environments that foster foundational skill development, boost confidence, and cultivate a lifelong love of learning. Beyond the school day, I lead a basketball club, support students through Saturday Academy, and offer personalized after-school tutoring. I also coach basketball in other school communities, using athletics as a platform to develop confidence, character, and teamwork.

I view education and athletics as deeply connected—both teach discipline, perseverance, and the value of effort. Whether a student is solving a math problem or running drills on the court, I believe that where effort begins, achievement will follow—and that strong, supportive relationships strengthen that journey.

My commitment to youth development continues through the summer. I began working at Home Run Baseball Camp in middle school and eventually led several clinics in Southeast DC. In 2024, I returned as Camp Director, continuing my connection to a community that helped shape my path.

Currently, I am pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership at Manhattanville University, preparing to expand my impact as a leader in education. I live in White Plains, NY, with my wife, and we are joyfully preparing to welcome our first child.

I am driven by a deep belief in equity, creativity, and the power of authentic connection. My mission is to help every student succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally—by leading with purpose, building meaningful relationships, and honoring the truth that effort, when paired with connection, leads to lasting achievement.
