Leading with Purpose, Teaching with Heart
My name is Xavier Ellsworth, and I am a dedicated, purpose-driven educator originally from Washington, DC. From a young age, I felt a calling to serve others, exploring various service-oriented paths — including volunteering as an EMT — before discovering my true passion: education. This realization came during a transformative year with City Year, where I supported students in a Southeast DC public school. That experience affirmed my commitment to the classroom and ignited a lifelong dedication to fostering equitable, student-centered learning environments.
After completing my service year, I earned an associate degree in Early Childhood Education from Dean College. I then transferred to Manhattanville University, where I double majored in Elementary Education and Creative Writing while competing as a student-athlete on the track and field team. Since graduating in 2020, I have served as a third-grade teacher at Icahn Charter School in the Bronx.
My work in urban education is driven by a fundamental belief in the limitless potential of every student. I am committed to cultivating inclusive, empowering classrooms that respond to each learner’s strengths and needs. Beyond my core teaching role, I lead a school-based basketball club, provide academic support through the Saturday Academy, and offer after-school tutoring. On weekends, I coach basketball in other school communities, using athletics as a platform to build confidence, character, and connection.
I view sports and education as deeply interconnected — both teaching discipline, resilience, teamwork, and leadership. At the heart of my philosophy is the belief that effort is everything: when students consistently give their best, meaningful growth follows. This mindset informs all aspects of my work, both inside and outside the classroom.
My commitment to youth development also extends into the summer. I began working at Home Run Baseball Camp during middle school, first as a counselor-in-training, then as a counselor, and eventually leading several clinics in Southeast DC. In the summer of 2024, I returned as the camp’s director, bringing years of experience and a strong connection to the community the camp serves.
Currently, I am pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership at Manhattanville University, preparing to expand my impact at both the school and district levels. I live in White Plains, NY, with my wife, and we are excitedly preparing to welcome our first child.
My professional approach is grounded in equity, creativity, and authentic community engagement. I am committed to helping all students succeed — academically, socially, and emotionally — and to leading in ways that inspire growth, perseverance, and excellence.
